Liturgical Dancing – Africa vs. Western Culture

A good perspective from Cardinal Arinze on dancing and “dancing” in the Liturgy, why worship in Africa is culturally distinct from that of Western Europeans.

“It is different in Africa and Asia… because their cultures are different… The reasons for Mass are adoration, repentance, thanksgiving, and asking for what we need.  If the movements help towards that, yes.  If they do not, no…  But for those in Europe and North America who talk of dancing, we think it should not enter the liturgy at all and those people should instead spend that time saying the rosary.” – Cardinal Arinze

To see an example of what he is referring to, here is an Ethiopian Orthodox Liturgical “Dance”.
